Driving in California

CALIFORNIA DRIVING HUB

Driving in California as a Newcomer

A practical starting point for licenses, foreign-license rules, buying a car, registration, and auto insurance.

Why California first? Driver licensing, vehicle registration, and insurance are state-specific. Newcomly starts with California rather than pretending one national checklist fits every state.

THE ORDER MATTERS

A simple newcomer driving sequence.

1Know your license status

Visitor? New resident? Foreign license? Never licensed?

2Price insurance

Get quotes before committing to a vehicle.

3Buy and register correctly

Handle title, smog, tax, registration, and proof of insurance.

California deadlines newcomers should know

  • DMV guidance says a new California resident who drives must obtain a California DL; its driver-license fact sheet describes doing so within 10 days of establishing residency.
  • A private-party vehicle buyer generally has 10 days to transfer ownership.
  • A seller generally has 5 days to report a private transfer.
  • A vehicle brought into California by a new resident generally must be registered within 20 days, subject to DMV requirements.
