California deadlines newcomers should know
- DMV guidance says a new California resident who drives must obtain a California DL; its driver-license fact sheet describes doing so within 10 days of establishing residency.
- A private-party vehicle buyer generally has 10 days to transfer ownership.
- A seller generally has 5 days to report a private transfer.
- A vehicle brought into California by a new resident generally must be registered within 20 days, subject to DMV requirements.
